Medieval cities -Visual Thinking explanation

Initially, cities depended on the lay or eccleasiastical lords
The bourgeois gentlemen claimed the right to govern themselves
They created associations

 Those associations were called "communes"
They were free and their government rested on a communal council

Not wealthy people nor women were allowd to take part in the commune
The communal council had three objectives:
1) to collect taxes
2) to supply the city
3) to defend the city
The decissions were taken in the city hall
Mayors and judges became the urban aristocracy
